The Cultural Differences Within Our Society - 1609 Words

The cultural differences within our society of today occur more often than one would believe. Cultural differences occur due to how we were raised and the beliefs we were instilled with. A main cultural difference that has been in the spotlight recently is the idea of how to raise one’s children. After Yale law professor Amy Chua had excerpts of her book published in the Wall Street Journal, sparks flew bashing her parenting methods which she uses on her young children. Chua, who grew up with Chinese parents, chooses to use Chinese parenting styles to drive her children to success. Chua bashes the Western parenting styles within her writing pieces, claiming that her parenting techniques are superior. Many critics disagree with her†¦show more content†¦In Bernard’s writing piece, he believes there are four unique blessings of childhood which one can achieve with Western parenting. The first blessing is the gift of moral innocence. Children lack a great amount o f knowledge which gives them the opportunity to learn how to fully trust people. A child’s innocence is precious and should be protected. Seeing a child’s good intentions and sweetness in life is a gift within itself. The second blessing is the gift of openness to the future. Children have no expectations or their own future plans which allows them to be free to new adventures. This allows them to figure out what they are good at and what they enjoy doing. Third is the idea that children are not caught up in the time. They spend their time doing things they enjoy; therefore time is not scares or wasted. The fourth is that children explore with their creative side, producing their best artwork, mastering new gadgets, and thinking about deep ideas (Murphy 279). â€Å"They need to lighten up and roam free, to express themselves in ways not dictated by their upright, over invested parents† (Rosin 266). If parents force their children to do non childlike activities, then they will lack these four blessing that come from childhood. How Genes and the Environment Operate to Influence Child Development This essay will look firstly at the ideas that have prevailed throughout history, in relation to genes interacting with the environment, and the human developmental implications of this relationship. It will briefly outline the theory of Heritability, Evolution, Genetic Determination, Epigenesis, Developmental Plasticity and a ‘transactional’ model of development. Secondly the theories of Genetic determination, Epigenesis and Developmental Plasticity will be compared. Physical and psychological characteristics of child development will illuminate the differing viewpoints held by these traditions. Darwins theory of Evolution proposed ‘natural selection’ and ‘adaptation’, that an organism could only change as a result of ‘mutationâ€⠄¢, a change in the ‘genotype’ and that mutation had to ‘infer’ an advantage in the environment (phenotype) to be selected and therefore passed on. This process according to Darwin occurred below the level of consciousness [Darwin, 1859]. The organism is in essence ‘blocked off’ from its experience, leading to Weismanns idea of a ‘barrier’ [Weismann, 1885] and the central view of the genetic paradigm, which is ‘reductionistic’. Lamarcks theory alternatively, is of ‘transformational’ development, which results from the organisms experience of its environment [Lamarck, 1809]. Its prerequisite is that of the organism being ‘open’ to the experiences of its environment. ‘Interaction’ occurs at the genetic and environmental levels. Hence logically leading to the Epigenetic paradigm, which supports the same holistic, arrangements proposed by Lamarck [Burkhardt, 1977]. Two traditions with developmental implications were influenced as a result of the differing viewpoints of Darwin and Lamarck; they were Genetic Determination and Epigenesis. The 1960's essays The 1960s were a very controversial time for people all around the world. Over the course of those ten years, family structure changed, lifestyles were altered, and overseas battles were fought. The United States was going through multiple problems with youth rebellion, racial issues, and the Vietnam War. Our nation and others didnt always have such problems in its pre-60s years. In the early years of the 1960s, most families were close. They followed a traditional style where the husband would work, the wife would stay home, and the children were respectable and well brought up. Negro families were about the same except they had rougher lives and faced discrimination, something not many people knew about at the time. African American men and women all over the country were set on gaining more rights. The separate but equal thing wasnt working out to well. The Million-Man March, the march to Selma and other peaceful protests were starting to get more common. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very powerful person of influence and leader of such protests. Around this time in 1963, the president John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Linden B. Johnson was the next president sworn in By 1964, the Beatles and rock music had gained more popularity. Family life became a little more distant when family members began to take different political sides and views on political issues. Many young men were also drafted to fight in Vietnam. The daughters were also becoming more subjected to older parties and more provocative party games. Many college students were protesting the war and burning their draft cards. A lot of those students wanted to know why our country was really fighting in the war. They thought that they could also bring about the end of the war.
